The practice of the virtues progressively refines the light body (aura) so the denser substance is replaced by atomic sub-plane matter. Then the light body only possess substance suited to virtuous behaviour.
The corollary is that possession of lower sub-plane matter is a permanent invitation to improper influences (vices)
Aggressiveness attracts aggression. The learned attract other learned people. One's entertainment choices might indicate where one stands on this scale... also how one treats their animals.
I have wondered in the past how things would turn out if all army personnel were like the good guys played by James Stewart, Gary Cooper et al. Strong, but True.
It is apparent that there are those attracted to some professions because of the opportunity to express aggression, domination..

I suppose it does take effort to become more virtuous, but would knowledge play a part? I am only saying that because I am trying to fathom out where knowledge fits in when one is genuinely compassionate towards others.

Being compassionate effectively may require a degree of skill and knowledge. For example, one might not want to take away the pain before the lesson has been learned.
I can't imagine Mother Teresa making such decisions. For myself, I would think that if a person's situation has been bought to my attention, then I must try to do what I can.
One can always do something! World Vision and such can help with feeding and educating those in third world countries. Salvation Army can do the same thing at home. Join up. Sponsor a child, a farmer, an enterprising village woman...
Encouraging our youngsters to find satisfying activities and spending quality time with them can prevent all sorts of future problems, samples of which appear nightly on the news. (For some reason I was really touched by the fate of Amy Winehouse - and I was never a fan).
TV news might motivate us to 'do something' even if it is just something small. Even a kind word can save a life.
