The purpose of Masonry was a vexed issue in the 18th century with much discussion and little progress. Even now the purpose of Masonry, is said to be making good men (and sometimes women) better.
As the same could be said for half of the community organisations in almost any country, that hardly seems an adequate purpose for Masonry.
i suppose that depends on who did it first. there r also a lot of different skillsets mankind can improve upon. sometimes even, one mans better is another mans worse.
if ur afraid masonry is losing marketshare to like minded groups, rejoice! it means its catching on.
Since 1717 Masonry has had difficulty articulating its purpose beyond promoting moral and social activities. This contrasts with the traditional assertion that Masonry is connected to or even inherits the ancient mysteries.
Obviously it is so we can commune with the space brothers in the Pleiades.
They say Japan was made by a sword. They say the old gods dipped a coral blade into the ocean, and when they pulled it out four perfect drops fell back into the sea, and those drops became the islands of Japan. I say, Japan was made by a handful of brave men. Warriors, willing to give their lives for what seems to have become a forgotten word: honor. -The Last Samurai

Number 7:89 Young's Literal Translation And in the going in of Moses unto the tent of meeting to speak with Him -- he doth even hear the voice speaking unto him from off the mercy-seat which is upon the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubs; and He speaketh unto him.
I do hope that Masonry is more than a substitute for an ancient intercom. In any case it has pretty much failed in that respect.
Do we really have no idea of why Masonry was established?
- lack of knowledge of the purpose of Masonry - lack of identification of the nature of the genuine secrets - lack of GL efforts to recover those secrets

Could it be that Freemasonry was created to be a cryptic/allegorical repository of sublime knowledge..Ancient Wisdom of The Masters? Could it be that the lost secrets are the Wisdom religion of the Ancients?

Could it be that Freemasonry is the reminant of the relatively unknown Mystery Schools of the Ancients? The Modern archive of sacred Arcane knowledge or wisdom? which have been distorted akin to distorted christian doctrines resulting in exoteric Masons who have failed to grasp the real esoteric foundations of Masonry? (similar to dogmatic exoteric christians)
