I noticed on another site a reference to killing the ego.
What does that mean?
What are the symptoms?

Can you give me your definition of ego with regards to this question?

It is not my proposition. Use any definition that you like.

.. then I guess to me ego means the sense that I have of me as an individual. So killing the ego would be, for me, to do what I feel is right anonymously and then moving on.

Is the ego a spare part after a certain stage?

I can imagine that it would be

Perhaps the ego has later uses.
If so, killing would seem to be counterproductive.

I usually associate the prayer "Thy Will not mine" with killing the ego. That is a bit like saying, well this is what I would like to happen, however I will go along with your perfect Plan. (At this stage I usually wince ) Swords are usually associated with Will and the use of swords in Freemasonry might be conveying ideas ?

I usually associate the prayer "Thy Will not mine" with killing the ego. Does choosing between two wills necessitate killing the unchosen?

So what is it that is killed? Is it an attitude that disappears or is there some actual intelligence that is killed?
What would be the ethics of killing an intelligence?

What would be the ethics of killing a passing thought ... like strangling the dog next door who has been barking non stop for 3 days. This is not a real scenario in my life, just an example. (Though I must admit to hoping a hoon drivers wheels would fall off once sorry God)

Killing a thought or attitude may be good housekeeping.
But is the Ego just a thought or attitude? Perhaps there is a substantial entity that might have merits unknown to the human

If it is unknown to the human how can he kill if off?

I think the ego is well-known to humanity - judging from its use as a derogatory description.
Perhaps it is rather that the ego needs retraining. Who or what would do that?

My understanding is that ego is the attitude of me first. That everything is all about me.
I want to drive my big V-8 gas guzzling truck, because it makes me a big shot on the road. Yet, they have not considered the environment in this choice.
That guy who is associating everything you say with themselves is full of ego. Those irritating sorts that went to the same places you did or have kids that attend a name brand school.
Would be nice if they could be supportive, understanding, and considerate instead of competitive.

My understanding is that ego is the attitude of me first. ... Quite so, but what is the "me"? For example, some people with lifestyle diseases know perfectly well what is killing them but do not change. What is the "me" that is put first at the expense of life and perhaps relationships?
