A very narrow view of the world centered around personal desire.

I want to drive my big V-8 gas guzzling truck, because it makes me a big shot on the road. Yet, they have not considered the environment in this choice. Bad analogy. I drive a truck with a V-8. It gets 22 mpg on the highway. I use it to haul things and tow a camper, something I can not do with a "Smartcar." Ego is not involved.

There is a huge difference between need and want.
There are many around here who have no realistic need for such a machine.

A very narrow view of the world centered around personal desire. So what is doing the desiring if that entity has little interest in physical life?

Paul is implying, of course, that we are not in control, but that alien entities are driving our bodies around, controlling our thoughts, and that we are simply along for the ride, helpless and imprisoned in a meat suit.
I reject this view.

What is the I that rejects the view?

What is the I that rejects the view? There you go again. The only "I" that is in here...

How does the "I" work in schizophrenia?

It certainly isn't alien entities invading the person's brain.

A very narrow view of the world centered around personal desire. So what is doing the desiring if that entity has little interest in physical life? There is no separate entity. All is One. We are not all separate from each other either. We work together with the planet and universe like cells in an organism. If you kill ego or die to self(ishness, or -interest), you will see the all-inclusive expansive view. And trust me, it doesn't include being controlled by aliens. You find that what is controlling you is past fears, wounds, and scars. Many of which you don't recall or have buried so deep that you can't recall.

It certainly isn't alien entities invading the person's brain. So is there more than one "I" present in a schizophrenic?

No, just the same "I" fragmented. Schizophrenics can demonstrate quite different personas. It might seem then that sameness is not an entirely accurate description of the imputed fragments. If over some years, various "fragments" dominate - each with different behaviours, then it would seem practical to treat them each as being a different "I". Of course the hypothesis that the various personas are fragments of the one entity remains to be proven. One might always consider alternate hypotheses just in case acting upon the first did not turn out to be effective.

I reject this view. At the very least, the burden of proof for this extraordinary hypothesis, rests with Paul

Schizophrenics can demonstrate quite different personas. That is a fallacy. You really, REALLY need to learn more about Schizophrenia.

schizophrenia .. 1912, from Mod.L., lit. "a splitting of the mind," from Ger. Schizophrenie, coined in 1910 by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939), from Gk. skhizein "to split" (see shed (v.)) + phren (gen. phrenos) "diaphragm, heart, mind," of unknown origin.

Click on the link (above). Schizophrenia has nothing to do with multiple personalities. The split the name refers to is between perceptions of reality.

Returning to the topic:
The human digestive tract contains a wide range of alien entities including bacteria some of which are symbiotic and others antagonistic.
(Latin aliēnus ī, m one of another house, a stranger to the family, foreigner, alien)
And as we know, the various planes of existence are filled with a variety of flora and fauna.
And since "as above so below" we may ask what alien entities inhabit the human mental processes?
We can expect some to be symbiotic and others to be antagonistic.
What then is the nature of the ego?

My guess is that the ego is the lost word. We are looking for our true self, which lies hidden under the veils.
