Returning to the topic: The human digestive tract contains a wide range of alien entities including bacteria some of which are symbiotic and others antagonistic. (Latin aliēnus ī, m one of another house, a stranger to the family, foreigner, alien) And as we know, the various planes of existence are filled with a variety of flora and fauna. And since "as above so below" we may ask what alien entities inhabit the human mental processes? We can expect some to be symbiotic and others to be antagonistic. What then is the nature of the ego? I had thought the notion of multiple personalities (and alien origins) was central to your topic. Moreover, I suspect you are now using the term "alien" ambiguously so as to slip into an extra-terrestrial usage. Another ambiguity is the term "ego" which Freud used to signify a superficial self, whereas Theosophical usage refers to an essential self.

Tamrin, you might like to start another thread on who are the real aliens. Native legends around the world provide much material.

What is the difference between schizophrenia and clauraudience? I have experienced clauraudience twice, and on both occasions I was given information that proved, upon investigation, to be true and/or possible. Since then I have always felt sorry for those who are incarcerated because of voices in their head. Naturally, some people need to be restrained because of the harmful requests or commands given. (With regards which... what about the famous bit about 'if we meet Budhha on the road we must kill him' Holy books and the language used must also be treated with caution. Some things are lost in translation/s.) I think that if you hear voices in your head telling you something, you should treat them in the same manner as you would if a stranger on the street told you the same thing. Aliens taking over the mind? We don't need to rely on their technology to do that... the USA have already experimented along those lines with implants (shades of the Manchurian Candidate)... and if they have I guess others have also.

Back to ego - is it possible to live in our world without a sense of self? I try and imagine myself being a 'helpful medicine' moving automatically to where the system might need aid ...
... but can't quite manage it.

a 'helpful medicine' moving automatically.... Perhaps a metaphor with more reference to collective life

What is the difference between schizophrenia and clauraudience? According to Joseph Campbell:What is the difference between a psychotic or LSD experience and a yogic, or a mystical? The plunges are all into the same deep inward sea; of that there can be no doubt. The symbolic figures encountered are in many instances identical ... But there is an important difference. The difference - to put it sharply - is equivalent simply to that between a diver who can swim and one who cannot. The mystic, endowed with native talents for this sort of thing and following, stage by stage, the instruction of a master, enters the waters and finds he can swim; whereas the schizophrenic, unprepared, unguided, ungifted, has fallen or has intentionally plunged, and is drowning. Can he be saved? If a line is thrown to him, will he grab it?

It is partially a matter of choosing suitable companions.
There may also be techniques for targeting converse - rather as humans use mobile phones and encryption.

This returns us to the notion of Self and whether or not we can be sure or at least have a good reason for supposing the voices in one's head are self-created or not.

There are reports of technology to produce voices in the head. "the Air Force released unclassified documents surrounding that 2002 patent -- records that note that the patent was based on human experimentation in October 1994 at the Air Force lab, where scientists were able to transmit phrases into the heads of human subjects, albeit with marginal intelligibility. Research appeared to continue at least through 2002. Where this work has gone since is unclear -- the research laboratory, citing classification, refused to discuss it or release other materials. Please step back and consider how we can distinguish between the voices heard by someone experiencing an auditory hallucination and which can usually be silenced by medication (and subsequently acknowledged to be delusional) and voices and other sounds generated by technology such as that you just described.

That would be a long debate.
Perhaps it is sufficient to recognise that the identity of the I is not always obvious.

J.K. Rowling Then dreams have no meaning either, for both come from the same source. "Hearing" a voice which one describes having sound akin to waking life sound, is no different to "seeing" coloured scenes, people and situations, akin to waking life scenes, people and situations. One is aural dreaming if you like and one is optical dreaming. And if optical dreams can be useful, helpful, prophetic, then why not aural dreams? In my case the aural dreams were sound only, no pictures - a brown out.

... The Lost Word.... do we see it first, or hear it? ... Let me suggest that this is a case of illustrated by symbol. It may well be that terrestrial humans as a group have been lost and their rediscovery of their true nature enables a fuller expression of the sounds of that kingdom of Creation. Thus the human kingdom aspires to contribute a full chord to the Song of Creation

However, both you and Paul tend to refer to inner experiences as if their realities were the same as realities on the physical plane (e.g., flying on unicorns over around the north pole). Those realities may intersect to a degree but they are not identical.

Let me suggest that this is a case of illustrated by symbol. So far so good. However, I'd like to know the grounds for your subsequent wild speculation: It may well be that terrestrial humans as a group have been lost and their rediscovery of their true nature enables a fuller expression of the sounds of that kingdom of Creation. Thus the human kingdom aspires to contribute a full chord to the Song of Creation
