>The border that goes around the pavement, one of the triangular shaped 'paving stones'?
I tend to think that the tessellated border represents the planets thought to revolve around Earth in a complicated pattern, but that does not tell us anything about the energy function of the tessellated border.
So from the envisioning we have the proposition that the border is involved in energy flows that connect above the Earth surface, perhaps into the solar system.
Perhaps it is worth re-entering the image and having a look at where those flows might be coming from or going to.
Could the pavement also be seen as two squares, the centres of which comprise the foci of an ellipse?

Pavements of dark and light rectangular tiles work pretty much regardless of the shape of the outer edge of the pavement. For example, pavements in shopping centres have the same function as those in temples.
Typically the flows on rows and columns of the pavement will reverse several times an hour. This is easily detected by moving your vision along the row/column and noticing which way the movement is easier.
