>hence the blue ribbon which joins the above to below. But why a ribbon? It seems very insubstantial. What about an ocean or a sky of blue? They can't hold jewels in place

Father Time, Mother Nature, etc. we do not believe these are real people so why do we assume that Isis, Hathor and the rest of the gods were persons? They may well have been, but I do like to explore other possibilities. Hathor, Isis, Mother Mary dressed in Blue were all association with nurturing and development. Widows Sons ... are being nurtured and developed by the energies and forces of our earthly environment .. ? .. hence the blue ribbon which joins the above to below. I'm probably just stating the obvious here, but I think frequencies of vibration are a key to this, as well as distance measure, angle, amount of Light... Words. Some simple thoughts on ribbons: Ribbons are woven, interweaving Light. Ribbons can tie things together and are elegant to look at, so may be more conducive to reverence than say a piece of string. Ribbons are flat, when wrapped around something, forming flat layers. Ribbons are smooth and flat and when held make almost no impression on the touch sense, yet they are very visible, possibly hinting at Light again. Ribbons have width but virtually no thickness and so can be seen from the 'front' but not from the 'side'.

That is hot!
Regarding the blue ribbon, Earth is referred to as the blue planet, might the two be related?

Why a blue ribbon? It means something - but what?

Probably has nothing to do with the blue masonic ribbon but it is a reminder of how things we take for granted are affecting us.

Probably has nothing to do with the blue masonic ribbon but it is a reminder of how things we take for granted are affecting us. When the sun is low in the sky the light appears redder due to Rayleigh scattering I wondered if during the winter months, with the sun lower in the sky the colour of light is a bit redder than in summer, and our bodies responding accordingly to the colours of light received, and if 'artificial' light might stimulate a similar reponse.

In the usual Masonic legend the body of the dead Hiram Abiff is buried in a garment bound with a ribbon of blue.
It clearly means something. Perhaps the blue is a reference to the widow Isis who is associated with a light blue colour.

We are 'dead' to the higher vibration realms whilst in the physical body of low vibrations (in the main anyway).

Perhaps the blue is a reference to the widow Isis who is associated with a light blue colour. Interesting, as Isis wrapped Osiris in linen after he was cut into pieces, one thinks of the way a mummy is wrapped in strips of linen. There is also a mummy wrapped in strips of blue linen at the Bass Museum in Miami Beach, this may be common, but I have not searched for more examples yet. " the deceased (Osiris) is instructed to "clothe thyself with the Eye of Horus, which is in Taa.t ['Weaving-town']" (Mercer 1952, I: 141; Faulkner 1969: 136) and elsewhere (Pyr. 56c) reference is made to "[the eye] which the weavers wove(?)" (Mercer 1952, I: 36). It seems clear enough that the "Eye of Horus" is linen cloth. Also in Pyr. 56a-57e Tayt (Taa.t), the "mistress of linen" whose name is usually written with a weaver's-loom determinative, provides Osiris with linen (see Mercer 195, II; 35-7, 370; III: 818, 832-3). Evidently Tayt was worshipped in a weaving center ("Tayt") in Lower Egypt." from ANCIENT ECONOMIES I

So the ribbon of blue might be a reference to the burial process for the body of Osiris (Asar) who was raised by the Lord of Life, Hor, son of the widow Isis. That would certainly be appropriate.

So it looks like "binding the garment with a ribbon of blue" is a reference to Egyptian practices and therefore Hiram Abiff (high born father) was probably in Egypt.
Now it may be that "high born" does not refer the height of the birthing bed, but to both or either of being very tall or born "on high" in the heavens.
For example Asar (Osiris) was born in the heavens and thus both a "heaven-born blessing" and a "heavenly sovereign" (references to RC ritual).
So was Hiram Abiff actually Osiris?
Well it looks like the ritual is a combination of messages, as each new set of custodians concealed their own teachings in the ritual. While Asar was not killed with a club, James the Just, brother of Jesus, was. There are various stories, but the one I like is that James the Just was thrown down from the temple walls and killed with a fullers' club (heavy club for pounding clothes being laundered) whereupon all work in the temple came to a standstill.
Thus there may be two stories (or more) in the 3rd degree ritual.

L-azar-us, raised by the Lord of Life, son of the widow Mary.
The prophet Elijah raised the son of a widow at Zarephath.

There are often more than one version of the mythologies of Ancient Egypt, if I read it correctly, the leg of Seth which in this version, struck Osiris, could be compared to a club? "In BD spell 125c, §S6, the deceased shatters a block of green faience which he has previously buried and mourned and then throws the fragments into a lake (Allen 1974, p. 100). If the block represents Osiris, the ritual breaking would re-enact the cutting up of the corpse of that god by Seth and its subsequent dispersal. The elements of this initiatory rite, though enigmatic, seem to relate to the Osiris cycle: 1) rejoicing in the land of Phoenicia (cf. the finding of Osiris in Byblos, in Griffiths 1970, p. 141); 2) the severed haunch representing the leg of Seth which struck Osiris; " Page 150. >the leg of Seth which struck Osiris
Very good discovery.
In the ritual, Hiram Abiff is struck with a plumb rule, and level and then a maul. This could be read as suggesting that the ruffians with the plumb rule and level were the Wardens and presumably the third ruffian was the Master of the Lodge.
Perhaps the use of the working tools was a convenience in the ritual.
The presence of ruffian Fellowcraft however is very strange as the site had 3 Grand Masters. How could they have approved the entering and then passing of ruffians. Modern lodges would not do that. So there is another meaning.

What gives you that idea? I have met a few Masonic ruffians in my time, especially on masonic forums. In lodges it seems to me that some become ruffians after they attain 'mastership'.
I am talking about earthly lodges obviously and they fall prey to the same woes that other groups do. Egos, personalities, the usual stuff.

In an attempt to be thorough, and going through the possibilities, perhaps the ruffians were imposters, posing as Wardens and the Master, a sort of Anti-Christ scenario. I am not really in favour of this explanation at this moment, but I thought I would put it out there anyway.
>Perhaps the use of the working tools was a convenience in the ritual. This I cannot agree with.

I still believe that the positions of the ruffians have more to tell us than the implements. Ida, Pingala, Sushumna ... and Ida is associated with both the colour silver (cord?) and the colour blue. These three (should ) work in perfect harmony. And without one the other two cannot complete their purpose. These three also produce the rainbow (covenant) and the eye that is single. Ida is the feminine moon aspect, which the male craft needs to take on board, to balance themselves. www.energyenhancement.org/chakras/Nadis/APMB%20Nadis.htm
