These three might also explain the reason for the mode of dress in the three degrees and the method of ascending to the middle chambers.

Perhaps the ruffians were unwilling to give up (pass by) their worldly possessions.

I don't know that the ruffians were/are actual people. We kill off our own chances for success in endeavours many a time even in day to day life. Spiritually ... ?

The building of the Temple is a geometric creation process, of which the square, plumb, etc. symbolise the mathematical method. The cyclical birth and death, with death, I suggest, having as much to do with the Mason's tools as the building.

I still believe that the positions of the ruffians have more to tell us than the implements. Perhaps you are right, but it got me thinking about the implements. To set a stone in place, one would need a plumb for checking vertical alignment, a level for checking horizontal alignment and the maul for aligning the stone. So, how does Hiram Abiff relate to the stone, and does a stone laying flat, signify being dead? Possibly I am seeing things where I should not.

I understand that the ruffians were actual brethren who were unwilling to give up worldly possessions (their psychic powers in that case) in order to progress spiritually.
In my case, I had no choice. My astral vision just ceased (was disabled?) and it was a couple of years before mental clairvoyance started to appear.

...got me thinking about the implements. To set a stone in place, one would need a plumb for checking vertical alignment.. Masons are told that the working tools are used in a moral sense and that is taken to mean some moralising about being upright etc. The brethren seem to have forgotten that Masonry is veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. Thus we have: - "working tools" may be symbols of some hidden truths - "use" may be literal - "moral" may be a veiling for metaphysical. If so, there are metaphysical tools veiled by the symbols of physical tools, that may literally be used in metaphysical operations. As a simple example, a human of unknown quality may be visualised upon a pavement of square tiles to see how she or he interacts with the squareness.

That suggests an experiment!
So, visualise some person convicted of corruption, fraud etc, placed on the lodge pavement. What happens?

Getting back to the ribbon, and a comparison to Osiris and mummification, Steiner makes an interesting comment on the lunar forces as being mummifying.
Rudolf Steiner Egyptian Myths and Mysteries
pg. 39
"Thus two types of forces influence the earth; the sun-forces and the moon-forces, the one stimulating and the other mummifying. Let us imagine that a giant steals the sun away. In that moment we would all become stiff like mummies, so stiff that we would never again be able to lose this form. But if the giant took the moon away, all the beautiful measured movements that we have today would become convulsive. We would become inwardly entirely mobile; we would see our hands prolong themselves to the gigantic, and then shrink up again. The power of metamorphosis would be vastly intensified. Now, however, man is inserted between these two forces."
A brief quote here, which should be read in the context given on that same page, but I do not want to quote too much from the book. "Osiris is laid into a chest, i.e., he withdraws with the moon."
pg. 40
"Man said to himself when the moon shone down, “Osiris, it is you who from the moon send me the light of the sun, which belongs to your nature.” But this light of the sun is reflected in a different form every day. We have the first form when the moon appears as a tiny crescent in the heavens. On the next day it has grown to the second form, and so on through fourteen days until we have the fourteenth form in the full moon. In fourteen days Osiris turns himself toward the earth in the fourteen forms of the illuminated moon-disk. It is of deep significance that the moon, i.e., Osiris, takes on fourteen forms, fourteen phases of growth, in order to guide the light of the sun to us."
I hope to add to this some aspect of Isis' influence on this process, as so far it has been predominantly masculine.

AH-HA!!! By gosh I think you've got it.
In decades of reading that story I knew 14 was the key and never could figure it out.
I am going to have a wonderful time today.. revisiting that story and seeing what comes to mind. Thanks Fibo!!

You might want to consider the 28 days of a woman's menstrual cycle. Moon and conception.
(The Tetragrammaton just sprang to mind. Osiris-?-Isis-Horus)

Just a thought Fibonaccimatrix.. can you post that link in our library section please. Hopefully people visit there... it is a bit of a goldmine - hidden in plain sight it seems. Some of the links there are to complete libraries elsewhere.
