I'd say it was about 40 years ago that the MPGC visited our L. to rededicate it in a new location. She was received at the door of the L. with full honors and this included "gavels beating" which I never heard of before or since.
The music set a 4/4 time (Pomp and Circumstance) while the RWM and the two Wardens kept the gavels beating in a slow and dignified rhythm. That meant 3 gavels against 4 beats to a measure. I can't remember which officer added the extra gavel beat but I do remember holding my breath on the 4th beat.
Reception with gavels beating set the mood of the entire evening. I wonder of the ceremony can be found elsewhere in the world or has it been lost to time.
