I was reminded of St Clement of Alexandria who was asked what should be said about the secret gospel of Mark:
'To them, therefore, as I said above, one must never give way; nor, when they put forward their falsifications, should one concede that the secret Gospel is by Mark, but should even deny it on oath. For, "Not all true things are to be said to all men". For this reason the Wisdom of God, through Solomon, advises, "Answer the fool from his folly", teaching that the light of the truth should be hidden from those who are mentally blind.'
I used to live in a community where on occasion a member would be said to have turned on the headlights.
This referred to their radiating too much light so that others could not perceive them clearly. The light of course was not physical but emotional and mental. And often too much light was being used as part of the process of pushing down the sensations of emotional and mental discomfort.
Thus the initiate takes care to keep the light mostly turned down so as not to blind others and to allow for clear experience of the workings of the persona.
