Certainly there are emotional and mental patterns that drive people to take what the existing owners think they are not entitled.
On the other hand it is common that a fraudulent employee will complain about being underpaid or a thief will consider him/herself badly dealt with by society.
So is the concept of "ill-gotten" purely relative to local morality or is there some greater system of assessment.
I recall Laurens van der Post saying that you should never take more than you need from the bush. Even if no one sees, the bush sees and your actions will draw a response.

So can we detect the metaphysical basis of the rightness of the action?
Or is it just a matter of individual conscience to the extent that it exists?
