How much of your body could be cut off before you cease entirely?
Those with out of body experiences consider that the (physical) body is not necessary for existence.
This was one of the critical experiences achieved by the raising of the candidate in ancient times. After that the newly raised brother certainly knew how to die.

I used to have these sorts of discussions with the head of our IT Dept, he was interested in what I had to say but could not quite come to grips with it entirely, like you he had a reasonable, logical mind. He had a heart attack after jogging one day, and died. He was still in his 50's.
One year later, I was woken up by someone poking me on the chest, I opened my eyes and there was my late colleague. There for an instant and then gone. I reckon he poked everyone else and got no response, then remembered me

We have one so I am guessing that we do need one at this stage of our experience.
According to some philosophies, we became entangled in our own creations. The Fall? The trick is to now work ourselves out of the trap (or off the wheel).

If we need one at this stage that would imply that the associated phenomena of the physical realm cannot be dispensed with. We should understand that and know it, not dispense with it after a cursory reading.
