I recall going through a re-birthing experience and as I came forward to 18 months before my birth I suddenly said out loud: It is not my turn!
I was quite put out with having to be born then.
So that indicates that for me at least, the incoming process starts well before conception.
I recall my elder son as a baby with colic. I walked him around at 2am most nights in the dark house. I saw that his spiritual light was only in the top part of his body, but it gradually extended down. When the light reached his digestive system his colic ceased and I had better sleep.
My understanding is that cot deaths often are the result of the soul refusing the incarnation. Apparently that can be done up to 18 months of age without karmic results. Sometimes the incoming soul objects to the family.
I remember one case where I thought the baby looked quite wooden - not nearly enough life force. I was not surprised when she died a month later of no obvious cause.
I recall a pregnant woman in the spiritual community. She and her husband decided to leave the commmunity. A few days later I saw her and felt that the pregnancy had changed. So I asked her and she said that the incoming child used to make her meditate every day but now it felt differently and had no interest in whether she meditated.
As far as I could see, the original soul was coming to live in the community and when it could not, it abandoned the pregnancy and another soul took over.
That may also occur in humans - as a "walk-in". Lobsang Rampa was an example - a Tibetan monk waking up in an Irish body.
My above use of the term "soul" is not technically exact but is the common usage.
