There is a very pleasant staff member at a large wine & spirit merchant who conducts tastings with a regular clientele. I noticed that he is perhaps a little too eager to please and since he was willing, I asked him a few questions based on my experience with similar situations.
It turns out that he:
- does not like ticking clocks - will not use escalators - has trouble with authority.
This is a standard set of symptoms from the Inquisition.
Ticking clocks are also a problem for those previously engaged in jungle warfare, e.g. Vietnam.
If you stand near an escalator you may see perhaps 10% of those using it have difficulty stepping on. (Others will not use an escalator at all) If you speak to some of those you may well find that they also cannot sleep with a ticking clock.
The simple answer is that the escalator reminds some people of the drums of the Rack and the pawl made a clicking noise as the drum turned - hence the need to listen for the next tick.

I have met people who don't like ticking clocks and also people who are afraid of stepping on escalators. I see the relationship with the Rack. I think warfare in general has a lot to do with a dislike of ticking clocks.

Hmm funnily enough i do have a dislike for both of those although i can't think of anything dramatic in my history that would lead me to feeling so,never thought of linking these things before.
