Where is the Beauty in LorrB's film clip? Is it in the fact that a man of 80 can manage a performance such as we've just seen with only 3 kites. Or is it in the graceful forms the performer can trace in the sky with 3 objects flying at the end of strings? Or is in a combination of elements that appeals to the eye?
Wisdom, Strength, Beauty. Which of these is the greatest? One of the three may be more appealing to us personally, but without the other two pillars the one we select is incomplete. Beauty itself may consist of three elements appealing to the senses, two of which we know intimately: sight and sound. The third element, present in some of us, is the apprehension of the Divine which can be evoked by Beauty. That may not be a “sense” in the usual meaning of the word, but it is a capacity that draws us out of ourselves into something larger. By the way, did you notice that the last name of the performer was Bethell, in Hebrew בֵּית אֵל = beth el = house of God?
One aspect of the film hasn't been discussed yet: that of the music, which appealed to me the most. The Flower Duet is taken from an opera of Delibes, Lakmé, which takes place in India. The heroine Lakmé ( > Sanskrit = लक्ष्मी = Lakshmi) sing with her maid this Flower Duet, which reads in part:
In order to be protected by Ganesh Let us go to the pond Where swans with wings of snow joyfully play And pick blue lotuses.
The entire post hangs together as a piece: an expression of Beauty.
Coincidence? Indeed the universe is not impersonal. But as the writer Burroughs has said, “In the magical universe there are no coincidences and there are no accidents. Nothing happens unless someone wills it to happen." Then the question is, who or what is that someone.
Maybe LorrB has spotted an example of synchronicity where the universe is united at all levels of existence. In that case, it is the will of the universe and not someone.
