with the population and oil usage per human both on the increase, reaching max capacity is unavoidable.. the question is only when..

And that changes the whole debate.

Hydrocarbons are not fossil fuels but natural products of on-going geological processes.

It is a matter of knowing where those processes occur and how fast they operate.

And of course we need to have some view of the role of hydrocarbons in planetary processes so that we do not disturb those unduly.

(a little silly aside ... and probably politically incorrect ... but ... has anyone other then me wondered whether the USA oil catastrophe is a little bit of karma? They want oil? they got oil.

That got me wondering about the UK as well... they wanted an empire and now the empire has come to the UK which is fast running out of space and resources)

There is an untold story with the BP well that is hinted at with this:

"A fire aboard the Discoverer Enterprise drill ship this morning has suspended oil collection activities in the Gulf of Mexico, BP said this afternoon. The fire was discovered at about 9:30 a.m. and extinguished. BP said in a press release that it is believed that lightning caused the fire. "

Since when do sailors not recognise lightning?

Further the initial explosion in the rig was not explained. Also the rig sank - from my Google search this may be the only deep sea rig ever to have sunk unless in a storm or being towed.

A couple of years ago there were large booms off Southern Queensland over perhaps 200 km of coast. The explanation of military aircraft did not cover the extent or volume - nor one resident's complaint that the sound cracked a concrete slab.

I remember the Russians using local 'beams' directed at the US Embassy in Moscow (from memory) some years back. Was considered a conspiracy theory when it first came out but was then proved to be true. Is the HAARP program something along these lines or something entirely different?

We do have that anomalous area in Western Australian too... where two commercial aircraft had their instruments go haywire and the aircraft dropped quite some way before control was regained. Lots of injury.

Hi Coach - Excellent news - and I am not surprised! Folk everywhere are for the most part good and reasonable folk. It is the leaders we put into power that can be the worry (or the people behind them). Bring back duelling I say... then let those that make the decision/s fight it out by themselves.

(I come from a wild west town, that is my only excuse )

Ignorance is a potent tool which governments everywhere exploit. Our work in the second degree shows us how to counteract this. This isn't politics, it is just plain common sense.

(PS... I am wondering what Australia's karma might be ... we have proved outselves to be good allies, I am rather hoping that we won't ever find ourselves in a position where we will find that we have good allies.)

sorry didn't make myself clear... do you think HAARP is researching/using similar technologies for similar reasons? It is reasonable to expect that if one powerful country has something then other powerful country would have it also.

My limited understanding of HAARP is that involves superheating part of the atmosphere at particular frequencies.

This is not the same as the Cosmosphere that seems to have developed from the "killer satellites" of the 1970s.
