I never claimed that the idea could solve all of earths water problems. It was simply a temporary solution to help. The idea itself could be possibly life saving. Instead of just throwing our hands up in the air and saying "It isn't my problem", it was an option to help.
>Excrement or rather the byproduct of living matter?
If you read the original paper you might see that bacteria deep in the Earth feed off methane - stripping out hydrogen - producing ethane, propane, butane, .., oil,.. coal. They burn the hydrogen using oxygen from sulphates, thus producing water as a byproduct. The reduced sulphates are now sulphides and as most metal sulphides are insoluble, any metal ions around the bacteria now are deposited as fairly concentrated metal ores.
How good is that: oil, water and ore deposits generated requiring no effort by humans!
So much for peak oil. And in a century so much for peak fresh water.
One of the nice products is nearly pure gold nuggets. How does a swirling ball of gas condense into a planet with pure lumps of one of the heaviest elements right there on the surface?
The official view is that comets came and left the gold but now they have stopped coming.
The same story for the salt water oceans - once the oceans were full. Look at the land profile to see.
Such is human science!
If the bacteria cannot find enough sulphate they use nitrate. Nitrides tend to be highly reactive in solution so the nitrogen comes off as gas - thereby making the Earth the only planet with a largely nitrogen atmosphere.
You can see that in operation in Poland and Hungary where shale gas often will not burn - being more than half nitrogen.
Is this planet the only one with such brilliant bacteria?
The above is only one type of bacteria. There are other fun bacteria.

Yeah but who's gonna collect it? *Alone, takes a step backwards out of line*
I know of more recent stories of our past which speak of slavery as far back as the bible tells. I recall learning of none before other than the Sumerian gods, as I have heard and read a bit about this before(just never gave any over-thought to it. Well...when is big brother coming back(if ever)to collect again is probably our next question eh? Or has he never left.
Also if these slave driving god's that want minerals (or whatever), if they are planning on coming back, why attempt to better the world is probably the better question. What good is it going to be if the earth is just gonna get microwaved again? Why is it so important to ensure the survival of the human race? What makes them so special? I mean, is me zapping myself blindly into this human form and attempting to "learn" how to better it's situation going to benefit the humans at all. Or are we not here to benefit the humans, but our own souls(whatever or who ever we may be)?

The material forms are the densest manifestation of Spirit. How important are the densest forms?
Life drives forth, manifesting purpose, discarding old forms and making more appropriate forms.
Thus the forms die and make way for new ones, but Life does not cease.
>are we not here to benefit the humans, but our own souls
The humans are a means to an end. Souls are a means to an end. The galaxy is a means to an end.
Life holds the meaning and purpose for this universe. Then will come a pralaya when Life will take no form on any plane, until the next manifested universe.
Certainly some ethnic groups think their ancestors came from the Pleiades, but judging by the descendants it is not clear that there are enough old souls
