I heard a very credible interview on the radio just this week that Japan realised its situation was dire and was looking for a way to save some face and admit defeat. This was known by those in the US government at the time but they decided to drop two bombs anyway.
The targets were civilians.
As an aside to this I have a relative in the US military who recently posted on his facebook page (I know banter but...) something like "People are really friendly over here, its amazing what happens when you drop two nukes on them." I was a bit shocked.
Also in todays Economist (politics/economics/science newspaper that is well regarded) it notes that our of the global spending on the military, America counts for 1/3 of it.
I truly hope that America is keeping the world safe, but since they took all those German scientists when Germany was defeated in ww2 they seem to have gone from a fairly neutral nation to one that is pretty much constantly at war with someone somewhere. Which in itself is a bit worrying, but add to that all of the American whistleblowers from their military, a couple of well known service ones like Snowden and Manning, and the retired folk deciding that the world needs to know and coming forwards [revealing things that are quite sharp - like interrogation under drugs of service personnel who witness certain things, and it doesn't exactly inspire confidence] and you have to wonder how such a young nation will cope with such questioning from its own subordinates.
Mind you I know zilch about defence issue etc but America is a young nation with a lot of power and I can only hope that it increasingly leads through inspiration.
