Light is ... the vision splendid which on his way attends ?
Light is: Knowledge/Truth
Darkness is: Ignorance
It is that simple.
They say Japan was made by a sword. They say the old gods dipped a coral blade into the ocean, and when they pulled it out four perfect drops fell back into the sea, and those drops became the islands of Japan. I say, Japan was made by a handful of brave men. Warriors, willing to give their lives for what seems to have become a forgotten word: honor. -The Last Samurai
Only in the sense that spiritual sight was disabled by default in humans hence their common day is spiritual darkness.
For most of the other kingdoms with which humans interact that statement is not true.
Spiritual sight has most certainly not been "disabled by default" in humans. It is only so in overly material cultures.

Second sight may well be more common out of the cities but even in the non-materialistic cultures the shamanistic roles are considered to require a lot of training of carefully chosen candidates.
When I next have an opportunity I will look at some people from non-materialistic cultures to see if the usual energy blocks are in place to separate the etheric from the physical senses and the higher mental from the lower mental perception.
Darkness certainly involves ignorance (of the light) but whether that is the total of darkness is not so obvious.
I recall once that some friends had been complaining for a while about being afraid while walking at night at a particular junction on a path in a nearby parkland. (It was a very safe area in terms of crime so that was not their complaint.)
I went out to have a look one night. The night was dark (clouded) but there was light from street lights reflected from the clouds.
When I came to the junction I saw a small area of dark cloudiness. It was about twice my height and a bit less wide. I assessed that I was superior to the darkness and stepped into the middle of the dark cloud.
Immediately I noticed that I could no longer see the dappled reflected street lights on the ground. The darkness was thick and allowing only limited transmission of physical light.
I stepped out of the cloud and absorbed it - emitting the energy through my head (I do not advise that for those unable to control their level of consciousness).
After that I could not see that dark cloud and there were no more complaints by my friends.
As a bit of site history: About 50 years before there had been a suicide very close to that junction. Also a couple of years before someone skilled in ceremonial magic told me that there were some gnomes playing there (thereby generating the dark feel) and he put a pentagram on top of the gully.
The point of the story is that darkness is a presence rather than an absence

As a very simple test of the proposition that darkness can be a presence I did a search on Google for "dark presence" and that phrase was found 550 000 times.
Smoke without fire?
And on occasions I have run across dark presences - other than humans.

Indeed (and not much smoke): Normally I would say yours is a instance of Argumentum ad populum (Fifty million Frenchmen CAN be wrong!), except I'd say 550,000 Google hits is unexpectedly few for such a common expression.

Google only found 368 000 examples of the phrase "light presence"
It seems that dark presences are more often considered by humans. This would be odd if darkness were the absence of light.
You are being preposterous. "Presence of light" found about 693,000 - so what? "Dark presence' has a rhetorical resonance which I suggest "light presence" lacks. Even if it reflected a wide spread belief, it would be fallaciously meaningless in this context.
